Description:

A small, neat-looking sparrow, unusual among the black-bibbed species in that sexes are indistinguishable. Adult has dull chestnut crown, black spot on whitish ear-coverts, small black throat patch not extending onto breast, and white collar separating chestnut nape from brown-streaked mantle.


Distribution:

Common resident and altitudinal migrant in Ghizer and east towards Gilgit district. Usually seen around grasslands, alpine meadows, light woodland, cultivations and around habitations. In summer up to 4000m and 1500m in winters.


Behavior:

Forages on the gound, near bushes, in pairs and in small groups; also in larger flocks in non-breeding season. Predominantly a seed-eater, preferring smaller seeds of low herbs and grasses, including cultivated cereals; also a significant proportion of animal food, particularly during breeding season.
